Court Upholds EPA Engine Plan; Caterpillar Unveils Layoffs

On Sept. 6, a federal court rejected a bid by two makers of heavy-duty truck engines to overturn a key part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s plan to require lower-emission engines in new trucks as of Oct. 1. Engine maker Caterpillar Inc. announced its first layoffs related to that issue on the same day.

Diesel Price Rises Another 1.8 Cents to $1.388

The average price of diesel fuel continued to rise, going up another 1.8 cents a gallon to $1.388, the Department of Energy said Sept. 3. In addition, gasoline fell 0.9 cent to $1.394 last week.

OPIS Warns of Midwest Diesel Supply Crunch

The Oil Price Information Service has warned that supplies of diesel fuel in the Midwest are low and price increases could follow. OPIS announced on Aug. 29 that current supplies of diesel fuel are below 3 million barrels in the Midwest, more than 20 percent behind last year's figures.

California, Texas See Gasoline Prices Rising

Gasoline prices in California and Texas have increased, two reports released August 30 found. The Automobile Club of Southern California said the average price of self-serve regular unleaded gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $1.628 per gallon, which is 2.3 cents higher than the previous week.

National Diesel Fuel Price Jumps 3.7 Cents To $1.37

The national average price for a gallon of diesel fuel rose 3.7 cents last week to $1.37, a move reminiscent of last year. Seasonal factors typical of the fourth quarter will likely increase prices. Over the last two weeks, the price of trucking’s main fuel has risen 6.7 cents, the largest two-week rise since Aug. 20 - Sept. 3, 2001, when the price rose 9.4 cents.
