DETROIT – General Motors plans to introduce a new “front center” airbag on the 2013-MY GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, and Chevrolet Traverse. The new safety feature will be standard on all Acadia and Traverse models with power seats and on all Enclaves.

The new type of airbag is designed to help protect drivers and front passengers is driver- and passenger-side crashes. GM said it also expects the airbag to provide additional cushioning in rollover crashes.

The front center airbag deploys from the right side of the driver’s seat and positions itself between the front row seats. The tethered, tubular airbag is designed to protect the driver in the event of a passenger-side crash when the driver is the only occupant in the front of the vehicle.

GM said the 2012 model-year editions of these mid-size crossovers have received five-star Overall and Side Crash safety ratings from NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program, and 2011 Top Safety Picks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
