Toyota's 2021 RAV4 Prime Powers Up
Toyota is adding the more powerful and efficient RAV4 Prime to its 2021 lineup as a plug-in hybrid that delivers more than 300 horsepower.

Toyota is adding the more powerful and efficient RAV4 Prime to its 2021 lineup as a plug-in hybrid that delivers more than 300 horsepower, the company announced ahead of the Los Angeles Auto Show.
The 2021 RAV4 Prime, which will be available this summer, can generate 302 horsepower and still deliver an estimated 39 equivalent miles per gallon. It will provide an all-electric range of 39 miles.
Toyota will offer the compact SUV in SE and XSE trim grades as essentially a performance-oriented spin-off of its RAV4 Hybrid. The RAV4 Prime boosts total system horsepower by 83 hp over the standard hybrid. The vehicle widely outpaces the efficiency of the 2006 to 2012 gasoline RAV4, which delivered a 21 combined mpg.
The RAV4 Prime is powered by a similar powertrain of the standard hybrid that has been tuned differently to add greater performance. It uses the 2.5-liter four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle gas engine. By adding a pair of electric motors, horsepower is boosted to 302 from 176 hp.
