LeasePlan Netherlands has partnered with a Dutch scaleup company for the development of an electric solar-powered car, which the fleet management company will have available to lease, making it accessible to a broader corporate target group.

LeasePlan has become a leasing partner to Lightyear toward the development of the Lightyear One, the first car produced by the company, according to Lightyear. The first edition of the vehicle is expected to drive on Dutch roads by 2020, and is part of LeasePlan's ambition to eliminate emissions from its fleet in 2021 and its total fleet of 1.8 million cars by 2030.

The Lightyear One will be released as a five-seater hatchback with all-wheel drive, and feature a range of approximately 500 miles, according to LeasePlan. Lightyear has opened its production facility at the Automotive Campus in Helmond, the Netherlands.

The first prototypes will be launched in the summer of 2019.
