BMW of North America is recalling approximately 51 2018-2019 BMW X3 xDrive30i, X3 sDrive30i, and X3 M40i vehicles equipped with its Active Lane Keeping Assistant option because the steering wheel may be incompatible with the lane keeping technology.

Specifically, the sensors used in the lane keeping assistant system may not be able to detect when the driver’s hands are off the steering wheel. With this scenario, the driver may not be alerted by one or multiple warning signals, increasing the possibility of a crash.

To fix the problem, BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the steering wheel, if needed, at no cost to owners.

Owners can reach BMW customer service at (800) 525-7417.
