Kia Motors America is recalling 377,062 2011-2013 model-year Kia Sorento SUVs because a transmission issue may allow them to be shifted out of “park” without the brakes being depressed, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

The recall covers vehicles manufactured from Oct. 19, 2009, to Jan. 31, 2013. The problem may occur when excessive force is applied to the gearshift lever and the brake-shift interlock mechanism chips or cracks.

As a result, the vehicle may be unintentionally shifted out of “park,” allowing it to roll. The problem represents a violation of federal safety standards, NHTSA said.

Kia dealers will replace the brake-shift interlock mechanism, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin Nov. 24.

Vehicle owners can reach Kia customer service at (800) 333-4542. Kia’s number for this recall is SC124.
