Cadillac is developing a new generation of V-6 engines for its flagship CT6 full-size sedan, including a twin turbo 3.0L V-6 and naturally aspirated 3.6L V-6.
The 3.0L V-6 pairs turbocharging with cylinder deactivation and stop-start to provide the vehicle power as well as fuel efficiency, according to Cadillac. Peak output is estimated at 400 hp and 400 lb.-ft. of torque.
The twin-turbo offers other features including a lower 9.8:1 compression ratio (11.5:1 on 3.6L); large (36mm) intake valves and 29-mm sodium-filled exhaust valves to enable improved airflow; and increased valve spring pre-load tension to manage greater exhaust pressure during peak load performance.
The twin, low-inertia turbochargers use featherweight titanium-aluminide turbines with vacuum-actuated wastegate control for precise, responsive torque production, according to Cadillac. The titanium-aluminide turbines reduce rotating inertial load by more than 50 percent, compared with conventional Inconel turbine wheels so less exhaust energy is wasted.
