A field campus at Yellowstone National Park will soon be powered by used Toyota Camry Hybrid batteries to eliminate emissions.
The Lamar Buffalo Ranch campus' five buildings will be powered by a stationary distributed energy system that features 208 used Camry Hybrid nickel-metal hydride battery packs with a total storage capacity of 85 kWh, according to Toyota.
Solar panels and onsite micro-hydro turbine systems will generate the renewable electricity stored within the battery packs, creating a sustainable, off-the-grid power source. The system will create no emissions in generation, storage, or distribution of power for the campus. It is scheduled for installation this fall.
According to Toyota, this type of reuse is expected to double the overall life span of hybrid batteries. Toyota Motor Manufacturing in Alabama is testing a similar project to help power their operations and provide backup power during emergencies. Toyota dealers in Japan have been using used hybrid battery packs for stationary power storage since 2013.
In addition to the batteries, Toyota also recently donated a RAV4 to the park.
