Connected operations provider Samsara has released data that shows how its customers have reduced costs within their first year of adoption.

For the report, Samsara evaluated hundreds of its Logistics and Field Services customers with more than 793 million miles driven among them in the last year.

Findings from the sample customer cohort in their first year of Samsara adoption saw:

  • 47% reduction in crashes. Better yet, customers with both Samsara vehicle telematics and video-based safety solutions saw an even more dramatic decrease of 63%. This can lead to cost savings, as an average crash can cost between $16,500 and $74,000, and even higher if there is a fatality.
  • 40% decrease in idling: Fuel can represent on average 60% of a fleet's total operating budget. Using telematics data, customers can easily identify and coach drivers on fuel-wasting driving practices like idling. This 40% decrease is equivalent to roughly $2,500 per vehicle saved in a year, Samsara said.
  • 20+% improvement in vehicle utilization: The average fleet wastes up to about 10% of its annual budget, the report noted. This improvement can be a direct translation to revenue per vehicle, in addition to new savings found by selling underutilized assets.

To illustrate specific examples of actual users, Samsara cites Chalk Mountain Services, winner of the 2022 Samsara Connected Operations Award for Safest Operator, which uses Samsara’s Vehicle Gateways and Video-Based Safety solutions. Its company was able to identify risky behaviors and coach its drivers, resulting in reduced accident costs by 86%, decreased worker compensation costs by 43%, and improved driver retention by 15% through a data-driven rewards program.

Dohrn Transfer was able to reduce idling and improved fuel efficiency by 50%, implementing a fuel coaching and gamification program based on Samsara data that enabled it to implement smarter idling policies, track progress, take action on fuel waste in real-time, and reward drivers who practiced responsible fuel management.

Finally, Artera, winner of the 2022 Samsara Connected Operations Award for Digital Transformation of the Year, was able to leverage utilization insights and realize savings, according to a blog post. “With real-time operational data, we can make smarter business decisions that directly impact our bottom line,” said Farrukh Rafiq, chief procurement officer and VP of fleet. “For example, we recently sold $10 million of underutilized equipment, freeing up cash flow to invest in areas that matter—like new equipment we really need. But most importantly, the technology keeps our people safe behind the wheel.”

Samsara's sample customer cohort from the study includes:

  • 395 large Samsara customers in the field services and logistics industries.
  • Who operate in the United States and Canada.
  • Who have more than 100 active devices (either Samsara’s Vehicle Telematics or Video-Based Safety solutions).
  • And who have collectively traveled more than 793 million total miles in the last 12 months.

Samsara’s Connected Operations Cloud collects more than 4.6 trillion sensor data points annually from IoT devices around the world.

The complete analysis of the study data and additional insights, are available on Samsara's blog.
