Ford Motor Company is recalling an estimated 661,162 Ford Explorer vehicles 2016-2019 for a roof rail cover issue. Specifically, the covers may detach and fly into the roadway, becoming a hazard to all road users.

Ford is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries related to this problem.

The automaker has noted that affected Explorer series vehicles include base and XLT trim levels, as well as Police Interceptor and Explorer Sport models with roof rail covers that are painted silver, black or absolute black.

To fix the problem, dealers will secure the roof rails with plastic pushpins.

Customer notifications will begin the week of June 28. Ford’s reference number for this recall is 21S22.
