Jeep has unveiled it’s all-new plug-in-hybrid Wrangler 4xe that features a combined 375 hp and 470 lb.-ft. of torque, with a gasoline-electric powertrain that has 25 miles of all-electric range and an estimated 50 MPGe.
The 2021 Wrangler 4xe’s turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine features two electric motors and robust TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. The 4xe includes a pair of Dana 44 axles, a two-speed transfer case that enables full-time four-wheel drive, and 10.8 inches of ground clearance.
A 400-volt, 17 kWh, 96-cell battery pack mounts beneath the second-row seat to protect it from outside elements and to preserve the interior space.
Two clutches work to manage power and torque from the e-motor and engine. A binary clutch is mounted between the engine and the motor. When this clutch is open there is no mechanical linkage between the engine and the e-motor, which enables it to propel the Wrangler 4xe in electric-only mode.
The new plug-in hybrid Wrangler from FCA is part of the automaker’s plan to provide more electric options on each nameplate in the next few years.
The Jeep Wrangler 4xe will be available in the U.S., Europe, and China by early 2021.
