Cummins, Inc. has announced submission of its third engine for certification under the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) stringent diesel emissions standards. A company release described the heavy-duty 11-liter ISM engine, which is now under submission to the EPA. The ISM has horsepower ratings ranging from 280 hp to 385 hp, and is positioned as a complement to the Cummins ISX for short-haul trucking, vocational, construction and bus customers. Cummins previously received an industry-first certification for its ISX engine (NewsNotes, 04/02/02) and later submitted its ISB 5.9 liter engine for certification (NewsNotes, 06/07/02). The EPA standards are set to take effect in October of 2002, and require substantial reductions in diesel emission, to address environmental and health concerns.
