HARRISBURG, PA – About 200 Philadelphia taxi drivers stood in steady rain outside the Capitol for almost three hours yesterday to protest the recent decision by the state-run Philadelphia Parking Authority to link cabs with dispatchers by installing global positioning systems (GPS) in the vehicles, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Drivers traveled to Harrisburg to deliver their protest message to House Speaker John Perzel (R–Pa.), who led the 2001 state takeover of the Parking Authority. The drivers claim the GPS systems would rob them and their customers of their privacy, the report said. Drivers also are unhappy with the authority’s recent decision to retire cabs after 250,000 miles.
