Washington Adopts Calif. Zero-Emissions Mandate
Washington's SB 5811 also expands the types of vehicles required to meet California standards to include medium-duty vehicles.

Earlier this year, Washington passed HB 2311, requiring the state to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

The Washington State Senate passed SB 5811 this week, making it the 12th state to adopt and implement California's zero-emissions policy, according to Electrek.
Now, the entire West Coast requires that at least 5% of all vehicle sales are electric vehicles (EVs). By 2025, EV sales must make up 8%.
More immediately, once the bill is signed, people in Washington could see an increase in EVs offered for sale in the state, as some manufacturers only sell vehicles in states that have the zero-emission mandate.
While SB 5811 recieved support from the Union of Concerned Scientists, it was opposed by trade organizations that represent major auto manufacturers. The Union of Concerned Scientists say that the transportation industry is the state's biggest producer of carbon pollution.
SB 5811 also expands the types of vehicles required to meet California standards to include medium-duty vehicles.
Earlier this year, Washington passed HB 2311, requiring the state to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. However, a study has shown that the state is not on track to meet those goals.
SB 5811 has already passed the House and Gov. Jay Inslee is expected to sign it.
