Volkswagen will show its new Caddy TGI BluMotion compact van powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) at the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show, and begin selling it in Europe later this year, the company has announced.
The Caddy TGI BlueMotion can run on either CNG or renewable natural gas. A 1.4L TGI engine meets the requirements of the new Euro VI emissions standard.
Volkswagen will offer the vehicle with a 6-speed, dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) or manual transmission. The panel van and passenger car variants can also be ordered with a short wheelbase or in the Caddy Maxi version.
Natural-gas consumption is rated at 4.1 kilograms per 100 kilometers for the short wheelhouse variant and 4.3 kg/100 km for the Maxi version. This yields a range of roughly 630 km (391 miles) or 860 km (543 miles) on CNG alone.
Carbon dioxide emissions of the Caddy TGI are 112 gm/km in the short-wheelbase version and 123 gm/km with DSG, while the Caddy Maxi’s emissions are 116 g/km in the short-wheelbase version and 126 g/km with DSG.
Both the Caddy and Cady Maxi come with high-pressure tanks that are designed to contain CNG. The tanks are mounted under the floor, which means cargo space is unchanged compared to previous models.
