Volkswagen to Introduce New Diesel Engine in Select 2015 Models
Called the new EA288 engine, the automaker said it will replace all of VW’s 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel engines in Audi and VW TDI Clean Diesel models.
Volkswagen’s Oliver Schmidt, General Manager, Energy and Environmental Office, Volkswagen Group of America, said the automaker plans to debut a new diesel engine in the 2015-MY Passat, Jetta, Golf, and Beetle.
Called the new EA288 engine, the automaker said it will replace all of VW’s 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel engines in Audi and VW TDI Clean Diesel models. VW said the engine is a turbocharged, common-rail, direct-injection four-cylinder that can produce 150 hp, 10 more hp than the outgoing engine model, and 236 lb. ft. of torque.
To improve fuel efficiency, VW said it features low-friction bearings for the camshafts and balancer shafts, piston rings with less pre-tension, and a two-stage oil pump with volumetric flow regulation.
In addition to fuel economy, VW said of the engine’s design features reduce emissions, including an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, integrating the water-cooled intercooler and the EGR valve with the intake manifold, and packaging the exhaust after-treatment components close to the engine by combining the diesel particulate filter with the selective catalytic reduction catalyst.
VW said its 2015-MY models with this engine are slated to arrive in dealer showrooms in 2014.
