Volkswagen's Tiguan compact SUV will grow nearly 11 inches for the 2018 model year and arrive as a model perched between compact and midsize SUV segments.

The longer wheelbase 2018 Tiguan would arrive at 185.2 inches in overall length with a 109.9-inch wheelbase and available third row of seating. It would be longer that most compact SUVs on the market, except the Chevrolet Equinox (187.8 inches). The outgoing Tiguan model was the smallest compact SUV that was larger than subcompact crossovers.

Volkswagen will build the 2018 Tiguan on its MQB architecture and increase cargo space by up to 57% with the move. The model will be built specifically for the North American market and measure 4.4 inches longer than the European model.

The 2018 Tiguan will be powered by a 2.0L turbocharged, direct-injection TSI engine that makes 184 hp and 221 lb.-ft. of torque. It will deliver power via an 8-speed transmission to a front-wheel powertrain. Volkswagen will offer optional 4Motion all-wheel drive.

The vehicle will include available driver assistance technology such as adaptive cruise control, front assist with pedestrian monitoring, blind spot monitor with rear traffic alert and lane assist.

Connected technologies include available Volkswagen Digital Cockpit that allows drivers to reconfigure instrument panel and smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink.

Volkswagen introduced the vehicle on Jan. 8 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
