GLOUCESTER, Va. --- Following a successful six-month pilot program, Virginia's Gloucester County School Division decided last week to convert its motor vehicles to biodiesel fuel. The school board's unanimous decision affects the division's fleet of 117 school buses as well as several dozen other diesel-powered vehicles. The school division will use a biodiesel made from soybeans at a plant in New Kent County, Va. Gloucester is one of the first school divisions in the state to use a biodiesel blend in all of its diesel-powered engines, according to the Daily Press. Arlington County operates its diesel equipment, including 138 school buses, with a 20 percent biodiesel mix. The Northumberland County School Division on the Northern Neck is now running a pilot program.
