The Commonwealth of Virginia was home to 24,642 alternative fuel vehicles in 100 fleets along with 431 alternative-fuel stations by the end of 2014, according to Virginia Clean Cities (VCC).
The organization announced the statistics at its second annual Rally at the Raceway event at the Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, Va.
Fleet alt-fuel vehicles in the state include hybrids and vehicles fueled by electricity, propane, CNG, E-85, and biodiesel, VCC said. Through usage of alternative fuels, 16.8 million gallons of petroleum and 95,000 tons of greenhouse gases have been displaced, the organization added.
About 150 attendees and 50 alternative fuel vehicles were at the event, which featured a vehicle ride-and-drive on the raceway track and the inaugural Governor’s Green Fleet awards. Recipients of the awards, which are meant to recognize successes and achievements of green fleets in the state, were Supervalu for greenhouse gas reduction, Dominion Resources for petroleum reduction, and Greater Richmond Transit Company for green fleet of the year.
VCC said it has helped manage a number of alt-fuel projects, including a propane-autogas conversion project involving over 1,189 vehicles to propane across Virginia and the Southeast, the state’s electric vehicle deployment planning through the Richmond Electric Vehicle Initiative, and working groups for alt-fuels such as propane and CNG.
