Used Retail Vehicle Sales Dip in June
The CDK outage at dealerships has disrupted sales reporting amid a monthly decline.

Monthly used vehicle retail sales are following patterns similar to 2022 and 2023.

Retail used vehicle sales in June decreased from May, falling by 7.6% month over month, according to an analysis of Cox Automotive’s vAuto Live Market View data estimates released July 15.
A total of 1.41 million used vehicles were sold at retail – from both franchised and independent dealers – during June, up 1.4% year over year. Days’ supply for June was 47, up from a revised 46 days in May.
“We have observed sales and inventory reporting disruptions due to the CDK outage, but we anticipate these trends will recover in the coming weeks,” said Scott Vanner, senior analyst of Economic and Industry Insights at Cox Automotive. “While reporting was more disrupted than actual sales, we estimate a decline in used retail sales for June compared to May. However, much like a weather event, we believe any lost sales in June will be recovered in July.”
The retail used-vehicle sales estimates are based on observed unit changes tracked by vAuto, a Cox Automotive brand specializing in inventory management.
While these figures do not include wholesale used vehicles, they serve as a related barometer for the overall second-hand automotive market.
CPO Sales Volume Down in June
Both overall retail used-vehicle sales and sales of certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicles decreased month over month in June, according to data reviewed by Cox Automotive. CPO sales in June were down 6.7%, or 15,000 units, compared to June 2023. CPO sales last month are now estimated at 208,699, down from 225,704 in May, a decrease of 7.5%. Year-to-date total CPO sales volume is now below the level this time last year by 0.6%.
