The 2020 Toyota Highlander will shift to a new platform, add tech, and provide a gasoline-electric hybrid that can deliver 34 miles per gallon combined, Toyota announced as it debuted the vehicle at the New York auto show.

The 2020 Highlander is shifting to the TNGA-K platform, which will enable new technology such as Toyota's SafetySense 2.0 driver-assisting technology. The bundle includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, lane tracing assist, and road sign assist as standard equipment. Optional safety tech includes blind-spot monitoring, parking sonar, and parking support braking.

Two powertrains include the standard 3.5-liter V-6 gasoline engine that produces 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. The significant efficiency upgrade comes with the hybrid model, which provides a 17% improvement in combined mpg over the outgoing model.

The system, which includes the next-generation Predictive Efficient Drive smart hybrid system, will produce 240 hp overall. This system monitors and learns driver behavior so it can decide when to activate electrification to achieve peak efficiency.
