Toyota Motor North America has recalled over 1 million vehicles due to a software error in the parking assistance system that can compromise the rearview camera image, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The issue comes from a bug in Toyota’s parking assistance software that can cause the image to freeze or fail to appear. This malfunction increases the risks of a rear crash, according to the recall.

Toyota conducted tests between April and December 2024 and confirmed that the parking assistance software could fail, potentially affecting vehicles in the U.S. and worldwide.

Upon further research, Toyota discovered that the camera image could freeze for nearly two seconds if the vehicle shifted into reverse shortly after startup. Additionally, the software could record incorrect data on startup. Their research prompted the October 24th recall.

Toyota has traced the problem to a Tier 1 software supplier, Denso; therefore, only vehicles manufactured with this software are affected by the recall.

Dealers will update the vehicles' software at no cost. Notifications to owners will begin on Dec. 16, with additional letters sent once the final remedy is available.
