Toyota has sold eight million Prius models since the introduction of the gasoline-electric hybrid in 1997, the automaker has announced.
Toyota calculates that as of July 31, use of its hybrid vehicles have resulted in approximately 58 million fewer tons of carbon-dioxide emissions than would have been emitted by gasoline-powered vehicles of similar size and driving performance. Toyota also estimates that its hybrid vehicles have saved approximately 22 million kiloliters of gasoline compared to the amount used by gasoline-powered vehicles of similar sizes.
In North America, Toyota sold just over 2.78 million Prius models since 2000 and as of July 2015 sales of the vehicle have reached more than 1.59 million.
The Prius has also made an impact in the fleet world with a reported 3,617 registered to commercial fleets, 879 to government fleets and 8,426 to rental fleets in 2013.
This milestone comes just ahead of the unveiling of the fourth-generation of the hybrid next month.
