Toyota and Ford Part Ways on Developing Light Truck and SUV Hybrid System
Toyota and Ford have agreed to pursue separate development programs for a previously announced collaboration on a hybrid system for light-duty trucks and SUVs.
Toyota and Ford have agreed to pursue separate development programs for a previously announced collaboration on a hybrid system for light-duty trucks and SUVs.
Although they don’t plan to collaborate on this system, they said they are still looking at working together on next-generation standards for telematics.
Ford said it plans to move forward on the development of a rear-wheel-drive hybrid system for its pickup trucks and SUVs. The automaker said this system will be available by the end of this decade and will be based on an all-new architecture.
Toyota reiterated its commitment to hybrid technology, noting that it has sold more than 2 million Toyota and Lexus hybrids in the U.S. and more than 5 million hybrids worldwide. The automaker said it’s still on track to offer 18 new or redesigned hybrid models globally by the end of 2015.
