Starship Technologies announced that is has secured $40 million in Series A funding and plans to extend its autonomous delivery service to 100 campuses in the next 24 months.
With the Series A funding a total of $85 million has now been raised for the tech company that operates globally. In addition to funding, the company just celebrated a milestone of completing 100,000 autonomous deliveries.
Starship is looking to bring time saving alternatives to students across several universities in the U.S. and delivers everything from food from restaurants to groceries. University of Pittsburgh and Sodexo will start seeing the delivery robots on campus this fall, while Purdue University, Indiana will launch Sept. 9, with more following after.
Students can utilize the service by downloading the app that is available on iOS and Android. To get started, users just choose from a selection of food and drink items, then drop a pin where they want their goods to be delivered. Users can track their robot through an interactive map, and once their delivery arrives, they are alerted to meet up with the robot and unlock it through the app.
The robots help reduce pollution as they are zero-emission and are battery operated. They use a combination of sensors, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to travel on sidewalks and navigate around obstacles. The robots can also travel at night, in different weather conditions, and can cross streets and climb curbs.
