Telecoms Fight Proposed Talking-While-Driving Cell Phone Ban in Canada

The Canadian Wireless Telecom Association (CWTA) announced that it opposes a bill that would prohibit the use of cell phones while driving. The bill is under review by the Canadian parliament. Authorities in Vancouver report that support for the ban has increased since a recent auto accident in British Columbia resulted in the death of a driver and his 2-year-old daughter. Police say the driver was talking on his cell phone when his car ran into a freight train. But CWTA's Marc Choma insists that such tragedies involving cell phones are primarily a driver safety issue and the organization opposes any law that would ban people from using wireless phones while driving. Canadian Premier Mike Harris and Transportation Minister Brad Clark offer another possible solution to the issue: Police could charge vehicle drivers with careless driving if they were caught using cell phones while driving.
