Sun Microsystems Co-founder Bringing Ethanol Plant to Georgia

SOPERTON, Ga. --- Range Fuels, a Colorado-based ethanol company launched by Sun Microsystems co-founder Vinod Khosla, is moving forward with plans to build a $225 million cellulosic ethanol plant in Georgia's Treutlen County. County officials this month issued key environmental and construction permits for the project. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, plans call for the plant's construction to begin in Soperton this summer. The plant is expected to produce 100 million gallons of ethanol and methanol annually. Range Fuels will mostly use wood chips to produce the fuels, but is also exploring the use of olive pits, switchgrass, old tires and other materials. The company uses a thermo-chemical conversion process.
