LOS ANGELES – Subaru brought it all-new 2014-MY Forester to the LA Auto Show this year. The automaker said its new Forester is a complete redesign of its five-passenger crossover SUV. It offers two BOXER engine choices, a 250-hp 2.0L direct-injection turbocharged model and a 170-hp 2.5L naturally aspirated version.

Subaru said the 2014-MY Forester with the 2.5L engine, the 2.5i, will come in the Premium, Limited, and the top-of-the-line Touring edition. The Forester 2.0XT, with the turbocharged BOXER engine, will come in two versions, Premium and Touring.

The 2.5i models will offer two transmission choices, a new six-speed manual transmission and the Subaru Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) used in Subaru’s Impreza, Legacy, and Outback models. The 2.5i models with the CVT will achieve fuel economy of 24 mpg city, 32 highway, 27 mpg combined.

On the outside, the Forester 2.0XT models feature a sport design front bumper with a one-piece mesh-style grille and chrome outlined fog light bezels.

The 2014-MY Forester comes standard with Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel drive system. Subaru added that its high-line Forester models with the CVT also come with its new X-Mode control for the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Hill Descent Control systems. Another feature on the vehicles is a new Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system.

For safety, the 2.0XT models feature larger brakes than the 2.5i models, with ventilated front and rear rotors. Other features on all 2014 Forester models include anti-whiplash front seats, a driver’s knee airbag, Brake Override, and an impact-sensing fuel system cutoff. All the models save for the base 2.5i version come with a standard rear-view camera and a color multi-function display. A new available system is Subaru’s EyeSight driver assist system (EyeSight integrates Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking, and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning, according to Subaru).

Cargo room in the 2014 Forester, with the rear seats folded down, is 74.7 cu. ft.

In terms of size, Subaru said the all-new 2014 Forester is built on a new platform that has a 0.9-inch longer wheelbase, now at 103.9 inches, than the previous model. The vehicle’s overall length increased by 1.4 inches and its width went up by 0.6 inches. The Forester also features 8.7 inches of ground clearance. The rear door open wider, and the vehicle features side sills 2 inches lower than in the previous model.

Other new available features include a power liftgate with automatic close, keyless access and start, and a touch screen navigation system that provides smartphone integration. The top-line Touring models come with the navigation system as standard and also feature an eight-speaker, 440-watt harman/kardon audio system.

Subaru offers an optional touch screen navigation system that provides smartphone integration. The Touring model comes with navigation as standard.
