New low-emission vehicles with gasoline engines are as clean as hybrid-electric vehicles powered by gasoline and can meet stringent clean-air standards, according to a new study from researchers at the University of California, Riverside. A small number of low-emission vehicles, including the Nissan Sentra and Honda Accord were studied, and results found that these models can exceed current standards using California’s clean-burning, reformulated gasoline. Jim Lentz, a UCR researcher, believes that if future tests concur with these findings, “it will further support the idea that Los Angeles can meet the 2010 federal and state air quality standards.” However, the Union of Concerned Scientists believes that cleaner gas engines are a temporary solution to cleaner air quality and that the industry must ultimately move beyond combustion engines.
