Patent Reveals Electric Ford F-150 Details
The patent filings reveal a method to integrate batteries into a body-on-frame “skateboard” chassis in multiple battery housings as opposed to a single large battery placement. Engine motors could power each wheel.

The patent also talks about the possibility of an arrangement where engine motors power each wheel.

The patent filings for the electric Ford F-150 illustrate a method to integrate batteries into a body-on-frame platform, according to a report by Motor Trend. The platform will be similar to a “skateboard” chassis where the batteries are mounted low in the floor.
In the patent, the crossmembers will be placed between the left and right frame rails. As opposed to a single large battery placed centrally between the axles, the crossmember approach means the batteries will be put in separate areas of the frame, according to the report. Ford says the crossmember approach could have advantages for weight distribution, manufacturing simplicity, and NVH reduction.
Additionally, the crossmembers provide strength to the frame rails, which helps make the structure stronger, according to the patent. The number of battery-containing crossmembers will be defined by the length of the frame rails.
The patent also talks about the possibility of an arrangement where engine motors power each wheel.
