Ohio lawmakers are considering setting up a $16 million vehicle conversion fund for commercial fleet operators to convert fleet vehicles to run on natural gas or propane autogas.

House Bill 336 would set up the Gaseous Fuel Vehicle Conversion Program that would provide grants for five years for vehicle conversions to compressed natural gas, liquified natural gas, or propane autogas. The state EPA would administer the program, reports Columbus Business First.

The bill would also set up tax credits starting at $5,000 per vehicle of half the purchase price, whichever is less, for purchase or conversion of an alternative fuel vehicle.

At the first hearing of the bill on Tuesday, several proponents testified, including Smith Dairy Trucking, Ohio's largest independent dairy. The company has built a CNG fueling station and has begun converting its fleet to run on CNG.
