N.J.'s Refueling Station Shortage Hinders Conservation Efforts

ASBURY PARK, N.J. --- A report released by New Jersey’s state auditor reveals that the state has failed to meet its goal of reducing its petroleum use, despite having 1,700 dual-fuel vehicles in its fleet. A total of 56 percent of the state’s dual-fuel vehicles, which can run on unleaded gasoline and compressed natural gas (CNG), have never run on CNG. Instead, the majority of the fleet vehicles have used unleaded gas only, largely because there are only three CNG refueling stations for the state’s fleet. High construction costs have frustrated efforts to build additional refueling stations. In an op-ed piece that ran in the Asbury Park Press this week, State Senator Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex County) called for federal legislation that gives states the option to purchase hybrid vehicles as a means for complying with the federal Energy Policy Act of 1992. She has also introduced a state Senate resolution urging such federal legislation.
