Nissan is expanding vehicle production in Africa with the addition of a new assembly plant in Ghana, a country in West Africa, and Algeria in North Africa, continuing the Japanese automaker's plans to further expand auto production on the continent.

The automaker signed a memorandum of understanding with Ghana’s government to establish auto production in the country, according to Automotive Logistics

In Algeria, Nissan is considering importing parts for final assembly, according to Nikkei Asian Review.

Earlier this year, Nissan announced plans to assemble vehicles in Kenya, which bolstered the government’s plans to develop an auto-manufacturing hub in East Africa, according to Bloomberg.

Nissan will also make Ghana a hub for group sales and marketing in West Africa, reports Automotive Logistics.

The details of both new locations will likely call for construction in the early 2020s, according to Nikkei Asian Review.

Besides South Africa, there isn’t much automotive manufacturing on the continent due to several challenges including few vehicle-financing options and a patchy road network, reports Bloomberg.
