New Coalition Calls For Readjustment of Emissions Rules
A newly formed coalition, the South Coast Clean Air Partnership, is asking the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) to modify its proposed rules to be fuel- neutral. The coalition’s position is based on the air benefits provided through new clean diesel technology, which costs much less than the compressed natural gas (CNG) the new rules would require. According to a California Transit Authority study, using clean diesel technology instead of CNG would save transit agencies $627 million if all buses were to be replaced. According to coalition director Bob Sulnick, “The California Air Resources Board has already passed landmark new regulations for urban transit agencies that are fuel-neutral. The AQMD must provide the same options so we can clear the air and still have hundreds of millions of dollars left for classrooms and more transit solutions.”
