New Bill Would Give $1,000-$40,000 for Buying AFVs
A new Senate Bill would provide tax credits and other incentives ranging from $1,000 to $40,000 to promote cleaner vehicles and reduced fuel consumption, reports the Associated Press. The “Clean Efficient Automobiles Resulting From Advanced Car Technologies Act of 2001,” or CLEAR Act, (Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-UT), gives credits of $1,000 to buyers of hybrid-electric vehicles, or up to $40,000 for a heavy-duty truck that uses fuel cells or batteries to achieve zero emissions. Credits are also available for fuels such as natural gas or hydrogen. Sen. Hatch said the legislation “leaves it up to the consumer to choose from among the lowest-emitting and most fuel-efficient vehicles available.” Several environmental groups say they support the legislation, as do automakers Ford, Toyota, and Honda. General Motors and DaimlerChrysler say they support tax incentives, but don’t agree with how the proposal calculates improvements in fuel economy.
