ISELIN, NJ – Keith McLaughlin, editor and publisher of Canadian Automotive Fleet magazine, became just the 40th person in NAFA’s 49-year history to earn the distinction of “Honorary Member.” The award was presented at the recent NAFA FMI-LEG Conference in Florida. McLaughlin was recognized for his integral role in the Canadian fleet community, his strong support of NAFA at both the chapter and national levels, and his past work with the Can-NAFA Fleet Foundation. In a separate presentation, Ruth Alfson, CAFM, became just the third person in NAFA history to earn the “Excellence in Education Award.” The Excellence in Education Award is formal recognition of outstanding service to NAFA’s educational efforts and is bestowed only upon nomination and clear proof of worthiness. Alfson’s nomination was based on her efforts over the past 10 years, which included work on NAFA’s Certified Automotive Fleet Manager program, the Fleet Management Seminar, the FMI-LEG Conference, Project FleetED, and several ground breaking education products. Awards were also presented to Erle Potter and Gregg Hodgdon, CAFM, for winning this year’s Larry Goill Award for Quality Fleet Management Ideas, sponsored by NAFA and Bell Canada. Potter was recognized for his “TRUCKS” program, which requires training and certification for all shop personnel and management, while Hodgdon was recognized for his “vintage chart,” which helped his company’s executive management understand the need for capital in the fleet department. This year’s FMI-LEG marked the 15th anniversary of the debut of NAFA’s Outstanding Chapter Service Awards. This award, presented to one member and one affiliate, recognizes outstanding contributions to a NAFA chapter. Earning the Outstanding Chapter Service Award by an Affiliate was William J. Hoysgaard, regional manager for ARI. Earning the Outstanding Chapter Service Award by a Member was Tom Larkum, MHQ Municipal Vehicles, previously fleet manager for the town of West Hartford, Conn.
