GRAPEVINE, TEXAS – Highlighting The National Association of Fleet Administrators Fleet Management Institute and Law Enforcement Group (NAFA FMI-LEG) was NAFA’s Annual Business Meeting April 10, in which outgoing NAFA president Milton R. Reid passed the gavel and presidency to Charles Gibbens, fleet manager for Henrico County, Va. New Executive Director Phillip Russo, CAE, was also introduced as retiring Executive Director David Lefever, CAE, offered his thanks and farewells. Gibbens said that NAFA’s purpose is to educate automotive fleet management professionals. A new online service, Project webED, to be launched soon, will be “a fully integrated and interactive learning platform for fleet professionals to access educational content, products and programs, key communities, and e-learning opportunities,” as described by Reid. In his keynote speech “Living in the Age of Transitions” to NAFA attendees April 10, former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich predicted big change in the next 25 years. According to Gingrich, as fleet managers increasingly face more choices, the only way to keep up is to benchmark best practices no less than every 90 days. Today’s fleet managers must look for ways to save money and be flexible, or be left behind. At the Larry Goill Awards ceremony April 12, Unilever’s Oleg Cytowicz, automotive fleet coordinator, was recognized for his “U Auto Know” virtual fleet manager tool, along with Denise Guzzi, fleet manager for the Broward County Sheriff’s Office in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for the County’s development of a fleet mobile emergency response unit. The band, Vocal Trash, a mix of vocals and percussion featuring trash cans as drums, provided the entertainment at the Affiliates and Manufacturers Grand Celebration the evening of April 10, while the Marshall Tucker Band, a ‘70s Southern rock group, played at Donlen’s 40th anniversary celebration. Comedian Jimmy Tingle provided entertainment at the NAFA Chapter Recognition Luncheon April 12.

Cytowicz, automotive fleet coordinator for Unilever USA in Saddle Brook, N.J., developed an electronic fleet drivers’ owners’ manual. Stored on the driver’s laptop, the U Auto Know program serves as a virtual fleet manager, providing updated company policies and procedures documents. David Lefever, with his wife, Sandy, bid his NAFA farewells at the FMI-LEG conference in Grapevine, Texas. After 20 years as NAFA’s executive director, Lefever is retiring to the coast of Maine. Phil Russo, CAE, has been appointed to take his place.
