Mitsubishi Plans to Introduce Eight Electric-Powered Vehicles by 2015

The company has not released model details, but plans to launch the i-Miev in North America by 2012, as well as plug-in hybrid vehicles for the U.S., Japan and Europe.

As part of the new Mitsubishi Motors Environment Initiative Program 2015, the company plans to introduce eight electric-powered vehicles for the global market by 2015. The goal is part of its "Motors Group Environmental Vision 2020" plan, as well as a key aspect of its "Jump 2013" mid-term business plan.

The company has not released model details, and has declined to say how many of the vehicles are scheduled for the United States' marketplace, but it did announce some plans for its vehicle lineup for the U.S.

The company reiterated its intent to launch the i-MiEV to the North American market in 2012, and added that it plans to launch plug-in hybrid vehicles in Japan, the U.S. and Europe. Mitsubishi's goal is to achieve an electric vehicle (EV)/plug-in hybrid electric vehicle production level of at least 5 percent of total volume by 2015. The automaker also stated that it intends to boost EV production up to 20 percent of total volume as part of its "Vision 2020" plan.

Production of the Galant, Endeavor, Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder at its Normal, Ill. plant will cease by 2014, according to a Mitsubishi spokesperson. The company's spokesperson also said it will switch production at that plant to a vehicle based on the same platform as the Lancer, Outlander and Outlander Sport.
