How Volvo New Interior Lighting Replicates the Sun

Volvo Car Group is pioneering new interior lighting that provides a more natural color beyond what’s achievable with LEDs used today in the automotive industry.

Volvo will introduce interior lighting in its new flagship all-electric SUV, EX90, that duplicates sunlight through a full suite of 72 SunLike LEDs.

Volvo said the new, non-flickering lighting addition produces a more natural color beyond what’s achievable with LEDs currently used in the automotive industry. The SunLike LEDs, supplied by Seoul Semiconductor, will complement the panoramic sunroof and open cabin and will deliver “low light reflection and a high color index that expresses natural colors just as they are seen in nature.”

The Volvo Car Group is the first to introduce the LEDs to production vehicles with the Polestar 3 and the Volvo EX90. The lights are already used in residential spaces, hospitals, schools, museums, and horticultural applications.

All non-decorative lights in the EX90 interior, whether on the ceiling, floor, door pocket or trunk, come with SunLike LEDs as standard.

Volvo said the SunLike LEDs help with suppression of blue light, in combination with emission of non-flickering light, to reduce eyestrain and headaches associated with blue-light exposure.

“The well-being of our customers is always a main focus for interior design at Volvo Cars. Bringing in SunLike LEDs to the interior of the Volvo EX90 is another illustration of our ambition to bring in innovative technology to deliver a renewed premium in-car experience for our customers,” says Dan Fidgett, Volvo’s head of color and materials.
