Honda's Ridgeline pickup will enter its second generation with a 2017 model that will be debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Honda has announced.

Honda will show the vehicle in Jan. 11 for the first time to the media. The mid-size pickup enters a once-dormant segment that has become highly competitive with the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon returning for hte 2015 model year and the Toyota Tacoma getting a substantial refresh for the 2016 model year. Ford is expected to bring back its Ranger in 2018.

Honda has been producing the first-generation Ridgeline since the 2006 model year.

"We developed this new Honda Ridgeline to offer something new and fundamentally better suited to the way many buyers use their truck," said Jeff Conrad, Honda's senior vice president and general manager. "Ridgeline will deliver everything you'd expect in a Honda from incredible packaging and fuel-efficiency to top safety technologies and innovative, segment-first features.

Following its debut in Detroit, the Ridgeline will appear in a Super Bowl ad on Feb. 7.
