WASHINGTON, D.C. --- Honda is recalling 182,756 2006-'07 Civic coupes and sedans to correct potential problems related to the rear wheel sensors and bearings. Mechanics will inspect rear antilock-brake sensors and wheel bearings for damage and replace them free of charge, Edmunds reported. The recall began Sept. 17. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that on certain Civics, the wheel speed sensor housing employs an O-ring seal to prevent leakage to or from the wheel bearing. The NHTSA explained: "If assembled improperly, the O-ring may not seal properly, allowing water to enter the wheel bearing and eventually cause damage to the bearing, especially in areas where use of road salt is prevalent. If the driver continues to drive with this condition, it is possible for the wheel bearing to become loose. This could cause a wheel to fall off the vehicle, possibly resulting in a crash." Two such cases were reported in Canada, Edmunds said. Honda is also recalling 19,900 2006 Civic sedans and hybrids to repair a brake light switch. The problem can cause Civics with automatic transmissions to become stuck in park.
