General Motors says it will offer low-emission, fuel-efficient, hybrid-electric drivetrains in a variety of vehicles, starting with a new sport/utility vehicle that will be launched in 2004, according to Reuters. GM previously said it would offer full-size hybrid pickups in 2004, but now says it will offer cars, small pickups, minivans, and SUVs with the new powertrains. The “ParadiGM” hybrid system inte-grates either a V6 or four-cylinder engine with two electric motors and a battery pack. The V6 sys-tem reportedly delivers 35-mpg fuel economy, a 20-percent improvement over the standard SUV, with the four-cylinder version offering better fuel economy. GM said it plans to sell at least 7,000 of the new hybrid SUVs in 2004. GM also makes a hybrid system for city buses and is working to put its system in light armored vehicles for the U.S. Army.
