General Motors Corp. sold 10.8% more retail vehicles and 2.5% more fleet vehicles in 2013 than in the prior year among the 2.8 million vehicles sold in the U.S., the automaker announced Friday.
The automaker reported a 7.3% increase in total sales for the year. GM ended the year on a dip, reporting a decline in December of 6% compared to the same month in 2012.
In 2013, GM sold 656,340 fleet vehicles and 2.12 million retail vehicles.
GM is planning several new model launches this year, including new large SUVs for Cadillac, GMC, and Chevrolet. GM is also expected to announce details this month about its GMC Canyon mid-size pickup truck cousin to the Chevrolet Colorado.
GM's 2013 was notable for the redesigns of several models, including the Silverado 1500, Impala, Malibu, and Corvette. Sales of the Impala increased 10%, while Malibu sales rose 33%. The Impala and Malibu sedans, including the Impala in its earlier incarnation that's now sold as the Impala Limited, had a strong presence in commercial, government, and rental fleets with 137,601 and 79,158 added in 2012.
The company increased sales of its full-size pickups by 14%, and small cars by 10%, GM announced. It's small-car segment was led by strong sales of the Chevrolet Sonic and Chevrolet Spark.
The automaker increased inroads to small business customers, who took delivery of 26,231 vehicles in December, a 20% increase from 2012 likely driven by the expiring Section 179 tax deduction. GM increased its small-business sales in 2013 by 35%.
