General Motors has issued two separate safety recalls for brake and battery issues that cover over 800,000 vehicles, including Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups.
Specifically, GM is recalling an estimated 463,995 model-year 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Cadillac CT6, and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles because the vehicles' Electronic Stability Control and Antilock Brake System may become disabled due to a software error in the Electronic Brake Control module.
In addition, if this problem occurs, the vehicle's diagnostics will not illuminate the malfunction warning lights in the instrument cluster for the systems.
If the driver is unaware that the systems aren't functioning during vehicle operation, it increases the likelihood of a collision.
To fix the problem, GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, at no cost to owners.
GM's reference number for this recall is N192268090.
In a second matter, GM is recalling approximately 350,371 model-year 2019 to 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks because the battery positive (B+) cable rings may have been manufactured with excessive glue which could cause an intermittent electrical connection between the B+ cable and alternator.
This scenario can cause the vehicle to stall, posing an increased risk of a crash. In addition, the intermittent connection could lead to excessive arcing, generating enough heat to damage surrounding material and increasing the chance of fire.
To remedy the matter, GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect for the presence of glue or other contamination at the B+ cable attachment to the alternator as well as clean and reattach the B+ cable connection. If arcing has damaged the cable, nut, or alternator, the dealer will replace the damaged components. All services will be performed at no cost to owners.
GM's reference number for this recall is N192273510.
Both recalls begin Jan. 27. Owners can reach Chevrolet customer service at (800) 222-1020, Cadillac customer service at (800) 333-4223, or GMC customer service at (888) 988-7267.
