General Motors will cease production of the 1.4-liter gasoline engine that powers the Chevrolet Cruze and Volt by year's end, as it begins production of two new Ecotec engines for the next generations of those compact cars.

G.M. is replacing the inline-4 cylinder engine with a pair of new Ecotec engines for the 2016 Cruze and 2016 Volt, which will receive a 1.4-liter turbo and 1.5-liter engine respectively. The engine also powered the Chevrolet Sonic.

The automaker has produced 1 million 1.4-liter engines at its assembly plant in Flint, Mich., since 2011. G.M. is investing $200 million to upgrade Flint Engine Operations. The plant will continue to produce the 3.6-liter engine for the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon mid-size pickups, Traverse/Acadia mid-size SUVs, and Buick Enclave mid-size SUV.
