Sheryl Grossman, fleet operations manager for GE Healthcare in Milwaukee, Wis., will retire on June 30, culminating a 40-year career with General Electric. She was named fleet operations manager for GE Healthcare in 1984 and held the position for 31 years, up to her retirement. Grossman managed a fleet of more than 5,000 vehicles.

Grossman spent her entire career with General Electric. During her tenure as fleet operations manager for GE Healthcare she managed a fleet expansion from approximately 2,500 to 6,000 vehicles without staff, but with "a great leasing partner company and computers," she said in an interview at the time.

Grossman also served on several supplier advisory boards. She was also the NAFA Wisconsin chapter chair and in 2008 served as the NAFA Institute and Expo curriculum chair.

Grossman started with GE as a T&L auditor. At the time, this position reported to the person who was also fleet manager. She left this department after a few years for an accounts receivable position. During this time, T&L and fleet became their own departments.

When Grossman returned to work after the birth of her first son, the fleet accountant position opened, which meant working for the fleet manager, her old boss. He hired Grossman immediately. At that time, it was a four-person department.

During this time, her manager provided her more responsibility, which allowed her to learn all functions of fleet management, Grossman told Automotive Fleet.

Upon returning from maternity leave for her second son, she learned the fleet manager was retiring. At that time, GE was in the process of downsizing the department to fleet accountant and fleet manager. When the fleet manager retired, Grossman ran the entire department herself, waiting for the decision of who was going to be assigned the fleet manager role. After six months, Grossman was given the job as fleet manager.
