GE Capital Finalizing Beta Testing of Fleet GPS System
GE Capital Fleet Services will complete beta testing of a pilot global positioning system (GPS) with a small group of U.S. customer fleets representing more than 10,000 commercial cars and trucks in June 2001. After successful pilot completion, GE Capital plans to introduce the system to its North American customer base in the third quarter of 2001. Earlier, GE Capital Fleet Services had signed an agreement with UK-based Minorplanet Systems PLC to extend its strategic alliance to North America and to begin offering Minorplanet’s Vehicle Management Information (VMI) systems that utilize global positioning satellite technology. GE Capital Fleet Services and Minorplanet began their strategic alliance in the UK in 1998. In the beta-test pilot program, fleet managers are using VMI applications for live vehicle tracking, logistics management, journey replay and reports, route planning, text messaging, and online data feeds to improve operational efficiencies in their fleets.
