Freightliner to Proceed with Natural-Gas-Powered M2 Utility Trucks
PORTLAND, OR – Daimler's Freightliner unit is going ahead with a natural gas-fueled version of its M2 utility truck.
PORTLAND, OR – Daimler's Freightliner unit is going ahead with a natural gas-fueled version of its M2 utility truck, reported Fleets & Fuels. A business plan has been approved and the gate process is just beginning for the vehicle, which is expected to be powered by the 8.9L Gas Plus engine from Cummins Westport, Inc. Freightliner brass chose the CWI engine because it's a similar to the ISL engine that's standard in the diesel M2, simplifying engineering and aftermarket issues. Customers will still be able to buy an M2 from Freightliner and power it with a Deere 6081 natural gas engine. Pacific Gas & Electric has 39 such vehicles on order (five will be LNG fueled and 34 CNG), with Deere engines installed by Southern California's Complete Coach Works.
