Three former executives of Cendant pleaded guilty to criminal charges of fraud brought against them by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the district of New Jersey, according to a story in the New York Times. The case stems from an accounting scandal at Cendant. The three executives are Cosmo Corigliano, former chief financial officer of CUC International; Anne Pember, former controller; and Casper Sabatino, former vice president of accounting and financial reporting. Cendant was formed in 1997 from the merger of CUC and HFS. The charges are related to accounting regularities associated with the CUC business that were disclosed in 1998 by Cendant. These irregularities included improperly recognizing fictitious revenues, falsely coding services sold to customers, and fraudulently manipulating merger reserves. The Securities Exchange Commission also charge Corigliano, Pember, Sabatino, and four other former CUC and Cendant officials with civil and administrative fraud.
