DEARBORN, MI – Ford Motor Co.’s is calling its new full-size crossover the Flex, according to the Detroit News. The vehicle will be based on the Fairlane concept unveiled at the Detroit auto show in 2005. The production version is slated to make its debut Apr. 4 at the New York auto show. Like the Fairlane concept, the Flex features a distinctive boxy design, three rows of seating, and five doors. However, the prototype’s double-dutch side doors have been replaced by a more conventional five-door layout. The Flex will be assembled at Ford’s Oakville, Ontario, plant. The new crossover is based on the same platform as the Ford Five Hundred – now renamed the Ford Taurus. Like the new 2008 Taurus, the Flex will feature elements of Ford’s new design language like a big, chrome three-bar grille and prominent Blue Oval badge. Ford plans to produce about 100,000 Flexes annually.
